Building A Tradition
Mike Getman has built the UAB Soccer program into one of the very best in the nation. In 2000 the team was ranked as high as #4 in the nation and went on to play in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. In 1999 the Blazers finished ranked #8 in the nation, were Conference USA Champions, and made it to the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Championships. The team is 107-47-8 over the last eight seasons. During this time Mike Getman has been named the Conference "Coach of the Year" three times.
Along the way the Blazers have defeated some of the country's best teams including, UCLA, North Carolina, St. Louis, UNC Charlotte, SMU, Furman, California, Col. of Charleston, N.C. State and many others. UAB has won more games in the past six years than any team in C-USA.
The Blazers have also had many
players receive national recognition.
In fact UAB has had more players
receive All-Conference honors than
any other team in Conference USA. Five of the last seven Freshman of the Year have been Blazers. Ten Blazers have been drafted or are now playing professional soccer.
"When Mike Getman arrived in Birmingham... it was merely a question of time before the Blazers would be thrust into the national spotlight." (The New York Times)
"...Coach Mike Getman has turned around the program at the University of Alabama Birmingham, where the Blazers are making a run at the NCAA tournament." (Soccer America)
Coach Getman
Before coming to UAB Mike Getman led his Harvard Univ. team to the NCAA "Final Four". A program that had not won the Ivy League title in 17 years, did so in Getman's first season. The team finished the year undefeated losing only in the National Semifinal in penalty kicks. At the age of 28, Mike Getman was the youngest coach in NCAA history to lead his team to the Division I "Final Four". Coach Getman has coached or played in four NCAA Division I Final Fours.
Before starting his coaching career, Mike Getman played professionally for two years as a defender for the Detroit Express. He was named the team's "Rookie of the Year" in 1982 as he helped the Express win the ASL Championship. In college he played for Indiana University, twice finishing as the NCAA runner-up.
The Staff
Coach Getman has worked hard to bring together his staff of top college and scholastic coaches as well as some of UAB's top players. Your skills and overall playing ability will advance with the experience & knowledge of our coaching staff. Our coaches come from all over the country and are known for the quality of their teaching. Certified Athletic Trainers are on duty 24 hours a day to handle any medical needs. Our trainers, coaches & campers stay in the same dorms. All activities are carefully supervised.
Session I
This camp is designed to give serious players a chance to learn and develop while enjoying a great camp "experience". To play your best, you must have the technical ability to control the ball. You must have the tactical ability to make the right decisions. You must have composure and confidence to excel.
Our camp is carefully structured to provide you with training in all three areas. Coach Getman's concepts, so successfully carried out by his UAB team, are the guiding principles of this camp program.
Skill training, small and large group tactics, and 11 v 11 games provide the opportunity to improve every aspect of your game. Our coaches & players, some of the best in the country, are eager to share their knowledge & skills.
Goalkeeping
Specialized Goalkeeping Sessions are held each week of camp.
UAB is becoming known as the breeding ground for top class goalkeepers. Our UAB keepers have been winning awards both nationally & internationally. The UAB goalkeeping coaches will guide your training.
Individualized training and evaluation is an important element in our goalkeeper's program. Small and large group training sessions further enhance your opportunities for growth. Each keeper will play in at least one 11 v 11 game each day. The combination of individual and team training will help you fulfill your potential.
Great individual training, competitive team games, responsive instructors, and quality facilities make the UAB Soccer Camp the place to be for goalkeepers who want to improve.
Session II - Advanced
This session is designed for the experienced soccer player who is looking for an intensive training program focused on individual and team tactics. Afternoon and evening games will be highly competitive. The training program includes training by position as well as skill and tactical sessions. This is a great camp to develop your game while challenging yourself against other advanced players. Seven current UAB players were campers in past years.
Older campers will train with college coaches using the same practice plans that are used with their college teams. Campers should have a solid fitness base so they will be able to participate in all camp activities.
Older campers will also attend a special classroom session to help orient players to the college recruiting process and how best to prepare. We will also have sessions on weight training, nutrition, and what it takes to play in college.
It is recommended that players meet at least one of the following criteria: 1. District, state, or region team experience 2. Selected to an all-league, all-county or all-state team. 3. Play for a highly competitive club team.
If you are trying to make it to the "next level" and are willing to work hard to get there, this is the camp for you. Space is limited so enroll early.
Facilities
The UAB Soccer Camp provides an exceptional learning environment. Fine training facilities, Bermuda Grass fields, indoor gyms, a game room with pool and ping pong, a lake for swimming, tennis and basketball courts, and air-conditioned dorm rooms, all enhance the camp experience.
Indian Springs School, a private boarding school, is located on a 350 acre campus, 15 miles south of Birmingham. Its rolling hills are part of the southwestern tip of the Appalachian Mountains. The quiet school campus allows us to hold camp in a safe and well supervised location. The newly renovated cafeteria provides delicious & healthy all-you-can-eat meals. Eating, sleeping & training, all facilities are just steps away.
Indoor gyms provide playing space regardless of the weather. Video and game rooms provide leisure activities during break periods. The private lake is a great way to cool down after training sessions. Our trained life guard is on duty during all swim times. Campers and staff reside in the same dorms. Staff supervision is 24 hours a day. Our Certified Athletic Trainers are on duty 24 hours a day.
